Farshi Ghararas for Pakistani Brides

“Farsh” means floor in Urdu, and a farshi gharara earns the name. Its legs are cut so wide and long below the knee that the fabric pools and trails as you walk. It is the fullest form of the gharara, rooted in the court dress of Awadh around Lucknow, and it remains a favorite for the Nikkah and Baraat. Brides usually pair it with a short kurti. Farshi Gharara, Gharara or Farshi Lehenga

The names get mixed up often. A regular gharara fits closely to the knee, where a gota or lace-trimmed joint marks the point the legs flare out. A farshi gharara takes the idea further, with far more fabric below the knee so the hem spreads across the floor. Some designs keep the gota joint. Others fall straight from the hip, closer to the old farshi pajama. A farshi lehenga is a skirt, not a trouser, cut long enough to trail behind you.

The gharara is usually worn with a short kurti or a mid-thigh shirt, which leaves its full width on show, and a long dupatta over the head. Wide borders, gota work and zardozi along the hem are the classic finish. Deep red, maroon and emerald are common Baraat choices, while a Nikkah version might come in ivory, pistachio or tea pink. Fabric decides how the trail behaves. Silk and jamawar hold their shape and fan out behind you. Chiffon and net pool softly and weigh less to carry.

Measuring and Moving in a Farshi Gharara

Length is critical. It helps to mention the heel height you plan to wear, because it changes where the hem lands. If you would rather not lift fabric while walking, ask for a shorter trail or a slightly narrower hem. Extra lining can help carry dense embroidery. Is a farshi gharara hard to walk in?

It takes a little practice. Brides usually hold a fold of fabric in one hand when walking, and a shorter trail makes it easier. We can adjust the length to suit you.

Can I wear a farshi gharara to my Mehndi?

Yes, in brighter colors such as mustard, parrot green or orange with gota work. Keep the trail shorter if you plan to dance.
